Touch Screen Kiosks To Boost Business

Touch screen kiosks offer businesses of all sizes and within all industries an incredible number of opportunities. Used properly and in the right location, the services they provide can greatly increase revenue directly or indirectly by optimizing customer experience. Whether you’re interested in getting on board with touch screen kiosks to reduce your store’s wait times or to establish an additional channel of income, there are a few things your company needs to think about before contacting Tactile Technologies. Let’s take a look…

What’s Your Business Problem?

Touch screen kiosks are ultimately deployed to solve a problem or several problems. What’s yours? What’s your business challenge? Why do you want to deploy a touch screen kiosk(s) to your retail outlets and what problem are you trying to overcome by investing in self-service kiosks?

In our experience as touch screen kiosk specialists, customers typically approach us with one or a variety of the following challenges:

  • Extensive queues and wait times.

Owing to the time-expensive operations of some businesses, customers are forced to wait a long time before a staff member can see to them. A self-service kiosk can greatly relieve the pressure on staff by enabling customers to help themselves and get their task completed without waiting in a queue. The Kodak photo-printing kiosk is a great example. This easy-to-use and intuitive system guides customers through the photo printing service, allowing them to select photo size and finish before hitting the “print” button. All they then need to do is pay. Ster-Kinekor’s ticketing kiosks are another example.

In both cases, customers are getting great service without having to interact with a staff member. This reduces the length of queues, wait times and the demands on staff, which all greatly improves customer experience (as well as the happiness of your staff).

  • Sell more products and collect more revenue.

What business wouldn’t want to do better? Providing more outlets for your products and services doesn’t necessarily require you to open more retail stores. A well-positioned touch screen kiosk could vastly improve your business’ visibility and generate additional lines of revenue. Self-service terminals positioned within your place of business could also generate a lot of additional income, perhaps by alerting customers to special deals and promotions that would encourage them to buy more products on the spot.

  • Provide more information.

Similar to the point above, a touch screen kiosk can be used to provide customers with a detailed inventory of your products and services, as well as any promotions or specials you happen to be running at the time. This not only relieves pressure on your staff, but also improves customer satisfaction as they are left to peruse your catalogue at their leisure. These self-service kiosks are also great for exposure and offer fantastic opportunities for businesses to hammer their brand identity and marketing messages home.

  • Overall, improved customer experience.

Shorter queues and wait times, instant access to information on sales, discounts and promotions, and comprehensive product and service catalogues at their fingertips… through all of these benefits and more, customers will be guaranteed a far better experience when they come into your store, which is why more and more businesses are deploying touch screen kiosks to their retail outlets.

Once you have determined the problem you need to solve, the challenge you need to overcome or the improvement you’d like to make to your business’ service, your next step is to define what it is you’d like your touch screen kiosks to do…

What’s The Intended Application for the Kiosk?

Understanding the goal of your investment is crucial for determining its applications. Tactile Technologies will be able to help you lay out the application for your touch screen kiosks given the goals discussed above and recommend a PC model, touch screen model, additional hardware and general kiosk design to cater comprehensively to these needs.

  • How demanding is the application? The PC your kiosks are fitted with will need to be able to manage the tasks they’re set to complete or else performance will be slow and frustrating for customers.
  • What touch screen size do you require? If for example, you want to deploy self-service information kiosks with maps and product catalogues, you might want a larger touch screen monitor that displays more content.
  • What additional hardware is required? Barcode scanners for reading loyalty cards or products, printers for printing receipts or tickets, keyboards for typing in information, scales (for weighing), etc.

Tactile is flexible in proving customized solutions, which can be integrated with whatever the client brings to the table. While we stock an extensive range of quality printers, PCs and more, should a client, for example, prefer to go with their own specialized printer, we can build a product around this technology.

Deciding on a Mounting Option

Touch screen kiosks come in three different kinds of enclosures:

  1. Freestanding: Unattached to a wall or desk. Can be installed in the middle of any space, such as a wall or store aisle.
  2. Wall-mount: Attached to a wall.
  3. Desktop: Mounted to a surface, such as a desktop or counter.

The first step in deciding whether you want a freestanding, wall-mount or desktop touch screen monitor is to look at the space you have to work with, where the unit will be installed and what type of kiosk will best suit that space without impeding the flow of your business environment or store. Also, you’ll need to take into account whether you want to integrate additional items, like a scale, scanner or printer.

Wall mounted or freestanding kiosks are often the best designs to go with if you have additional hardware. They’re also easy to move around and, if security presents as an issue, you can bolt them down. Desktop kiosks are a little trickier to move around and they require a desk or countertop to be installed on, however, if you’ve got such a space, they can be the better option for your business.

Standard & Customized Touch Screen Kiosk Design

Here at Tactile Technologies, we produce several standard touch screen kiosk enclosures, which we show to prospective clients (click on the link to view these). These kiosks are typically cheaper than customized ideas that require designing from the ground up, although they can be modified. Having said this, clients with bespoke designs often approach us and we’re happy to throw our powerhouse of talent and creativity into these projects.

The final piece of the puzzle is branding and color palette. Each of the touch screen kiosks we design can be customized with the branding and color palette of the client’s business. The presentation aspect of the design is hugely important because it tells your customers what the kiosk does and how it can be used. While we can offer up suggestions and feedback on design, we often leave this in the hands of our client’s marketing team.
